REU camp 18-20 Nov.Mad Phil, Ian H, Gonzo, Charles B and Martin B.A heavily laden trip by all as stocks of food and digging tools needed replenishing and people needed to carry in personal kit. The general concensus of the diggers was that we would continue to work on our main projects and wouldn't be sidetracked the possibility of a connection to the team working in Aggy. With the new extensions from Iles Inlet in mind Saturday saw a close inspection of Friday 13th, and a quick look at the right hand wall of Still Warthogs (where there are a couple of very small, unpushed, narrow rifts heading towards the new extensions) and a quick look at Dades Choke and Mark's Headroom before the team headed down to their primary target of Last Spit Choke, Spaderunner. Phil and Ian worked away at the right hand wall of the terminal choke, revealing a possible (but choked) way on before heading off with Martin to Updweeb. Charles and Gonzo resumed the dig, adding on a couple of feet through loose fill and big blocks before chemical persuasion was required. By the end this undercut had extended to a body length and it is pretty clear that we need to go forward and drop down about 5 metres, probably through total fill, before standing any chance of regaining open passage. Both parties met by the Lemon Squeeze, then Phil and Ian returned to the dig to sort it out with a drill while Charles, Martin and Gonzo worked their way back up Still Warthogs, taking photos while Martin checked out the passage for geological similarities with Iles Inlet. Sunday morning saw Charles, Martin and Phil working on Upper Painkiller Passage while Ian caught up on some sleep and Gonzo headed out for a meeting on Mendip. Gonzo |
