Daren Cilau contains two main underground Camps: Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) and the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (REU). Previously camping has taken in "Big Chamber Nowhere Near The Entrance" and there is a further camp is situated at the western flyover, but this is currently disused.

HRC differs from the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (REU) in two main respects:

  1. It is used on a reasonably frequent basis by the group of people who maintain it, and
  2. with a few exceptions, everything is packed away after use.

The equipment and gear stored at the camps is relied upon by the regular campers, who have meretriciously brought the essentials to the camps over several years.

It is for these reasons that prefer that aspirant campers who are not familiar with the way we do things at HRC join in on an organised camp, and that anyone organising their own camp keeps the regular campers informed of their plans.

If you are interested in coming on an organised camp, you can either subscribe to the daren-announce Yahoo group mailing list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/daren-announce/ or contact one of the following people:

  • Chris Seal
  • Adrian Fawcett
  • Charles Bailey
  • This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it (For REU in Particular)

HRC can comfortably accommodate 10 to 12 people. Most camps start on a Friday evening, and run through to Sunday or Monday. The main objective is digging. Daren Cilau has stubbornly resisted major extensions in recent years, but the mountain holds great potential for new discoveries.

HRC is strategically placed as a rescue base and has been used as such. If a serious injury occurred in the further reaches of the cave, the camp could be in use for several days - or even longer.

If you are staying at camp, or just passing through, please find a few moments to write in the log book
