Further Progress at The Flyunder |
Further Progress at The Flyunder
27-29 January, the second digging trip prior to the
‘discovery’ of the Flyunder Passage, a possible key to passing the choke at the
end of Eastern Flyover.
Friday night; Gonzo, Andy and 3 Daren virgins, Matt, Mandy
& Niall from the Cerberus entered the cave.
A leisurely start on the Saturday (life is always leisurely
at the HRC) before heading off for the 3/4 hour journey to the dig. Light the
candles to heat the kettle, let digging commence. Digging in a half hour shift pattern,
we dug constantly for around 6 1/2 hours. Occasionally slow if a rock is in the way, sometimes digging in a cloud
of dust as you plough through the sand faster than number two can fill the
skip, always following open air space with a tantalising view of a few inches
of open airspace. I was lucky to have a half hour of dry sand with an
ever-increasing airspace before the passage was high enough to be able to peer
over the brow to around 2m of open, descending passage to an open archway,
albeit only body-sized.

Prospecting along Half Mile Passage |
Prospecting along
Half Mile Passage
I’m not sure when
anybody last put any effort into following the leads in this part of the cave,
but it doesn’t take a genius to work out that there’s a lot of passage missing
from the survey.
To that end, Adrian,
Charles and Andy headed off from HRC on the Saturday morning with the aim of
revisiting old dig sites and looking for possible new ones.
First point of
interest was a narrow rift on a bend in Half Mile Passage about 100m before the
tube linking Half Mile with Eastern Flyover. Quite possibly, this is going to go straight back to Western Flyover,
but who can tell? Five minutes of
shifting rocks and closer inspection followed. The general consensus was that it wouldn’t do any harm to spend a bit
more time here.

REU camp 18-20 Nov.Mad Phil, Ian H, Gonzo, Charles B and Martin B. A heavily laden trip by all as stocks of food and digging tools needed replenishing and people needed to carry in personal kit. The general concensus of the diggers was that we would continue to work on our main projects and wouldn't be sidetracked the possibility of a connection to the team working in Aggy.

2005-8-21 A new poke at Starbar |
|
In the end it was
just Mad Phil and Gonzo who went in at 2.30 pm Friday and arrived at
REU around 8ish. Early interest from from Imperial College Caving Club and Chris Seal was thwarted at the last minute. On arrival at REU they pigged out and crashed out. |
